At Trapp Family Hotel, sustainability is lived every day. It is not just a policy, but an integral way of working, serving, and engaging with our surroundings.
The hotel carries out a process to identify and assess environmental, social, and economic impacts to plan our actions. These actions are planned and implemented through a management system that includes 12 action plans.

You are also part of this effort, and every action counts. That’s why we invite you to collaborate with the following:
1. We are a smoke-free and drug-free hotel.
2. In Costa Rica, the purchase of archaeological artifacts is prohibited.
3. Help us save water. We have a towel-reuse policy.
4. Help us save electricity. Please turn off the lights and devices when leaving your room.
5. Support our waste-separation efforts. When visiting local businesses and tours, please use waste separation initiatives.

Place recyclable waste here, such as plastic and glass bottles, Tetra Pak containers, aluminum cans (drinks and tuna), clean paper and cardboard.

Place compostable plant-based waste here, such as food scraps, fruits, vegetables, peels and seeds. We produce compost with organic waste.

In the bathroom, you will find a bin with this sign. Please place toilet paper, sanitary pads, wet wipes, diapers, disposable tissues, dirty cardboard or paper, animal-based waste, and non-recyclable items.

It is an alliance of hotels in the area with similar challenges that decided to join forces to maximize their positive impact on the community. Currently, it comprises the Trapp Family Hotel, the Belmar Hotel, and Cala Lodge. H4's mission is to be a leading hotel alliance in sustainability, enabling them to reduce costs, share responsibilities, and multiply the benefits of the actions necessary to achieve the elite level of the Tourism Sustainability Certification.

This is an alliance of hotels in the region facing similar challenges who have decided to join forces to strengthen their positive impact on the community. Currently, it includes the Hotel Trapp Family, the Hotel Belmar, and Cala Lodge. H4 aims to establish itself as a leading network of hotels in sustainability, facilitating cost reduction, the distribution of responsibilities, and the maximization of benefits derived from the actions necessary to achieve the elite level of the Tourism Sustainability Certification.

The CST aims to strengthen sustainable tourism in Costa Rica. It is a technical tool recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) that evaluates organizations based on their social, cultural, environmental, economic, and developmental work in tourist destinations.

The Program is an annual award that recognizes the effort and voluntary work aimed at improving hygienic and environmental conditions and mitigating and adapting to climate change.

esencial COSTA RICA is the image with which the country projects itself to the world, promoting tourism, investment and exports, and showcasing Costa Rican culture and identity.

In Costa Rica, the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents (ESCNNA) is a crime punishable by imprisonment. Tourism companies that promote or facilitate this crime may be barred from operating for 3 to 10 years (Article 168 bis of the Penal Code).
The Trapp Family Hotel has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy toward any form of ESCNNA and is committed to guaranteeing the rights of minors.
It is a regional initiative to improve the quality of tourist destinations in Central America, promoted by the Secretariat for Tourism Integration and coordinated by the Central American Tourism Council. It involves tourism ministries and industry associations, and works with companies in various tourism services to raise standards and visitor satisfaction.

The Trapp Family Hotel has maintained a friendly and collaborative relationship with the San Luis community for many years. Since 2013, they have supported the community health post, the Community Rural Tourism Program, and various community activities.

CEAM is an inter-institutional commission (public and private) that aims to unify environmental education efforts carried out by different organizations in the area, for the benefit of the community of Monteverde and surrounding areas.

The Monteverde Institute is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting sustainability through community initiatives. It develops applied research and community development programs designed for international and Costa Rican students.

CORCLIMA is a commission working to help Monteverde reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, capture more carbon than it emits, adapt as quickly as possible, and serve as an example for the rest of the world. The Trapp Family Hotel collaborates with various CORCLIMA initiatives, one of which is the Monteverde Electric Route, by installing an electric vehicle charging station in its parking lot.

The Ecological Blue Flag Program is an annual award that rewards effort and voluntary work aimed at improving hygienic and environmental conditions and mitigating and adapting to climate change. The Trapp Family Hotel received its first Ecological Blue Flag in 2019. A commission made up of local stakeholders is responsible for activating emergency prevention and response procedures and communicating weather events affecting the community to the public. The Hotel is a member of this commission through the H4 Alliance.
